Ted Cruz just made his move to make the most of El Chapo’s confiscated assets to get whatever parts of the border wall Congress won’t fund built.
Congress is working on a deal – Trump is not happy but he did get Pelosi to go from zero new wall to 55 miles and that is better than nothing – for border security but Trump needs more money.
Trump also avoided the dreaded cap on immigration beds that would have reinstated Obama’s catch and release on a massive scale, so the deal is ok on many fronts.
Ted Cruz, who has long championed bypassing Congress and using money confiscated from El Chapo to get the wall built, just made his move after Guzman’s guilty verdict.
This makes sense on many levels – drug smugglers take advantage of our porous borders more than most and in El Chapo’s case to the tune of billions, 14 billion of which we have already taken.
14 billion, the amount allegedly seized by the feds, can build more than enough border wall. And now with today’s sweeping conviction of the drug lord, there is nothing stopping us from using that money.
From CBS: Texas Senator Ted Cruz has an idea to fund President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall.
Just make Joaquín Guzmán Loera, also known as “El Chapo,” pay for the wall.
Cruz’ Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order (EL CHAPO) Act would take money from Guzmán and use the funds for “border security assets” and the completion of a border wall. Cruz reintroduced the bill Jan. 3.
Mexico’s most notorious drug lord was convicted Tuesday of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation that could put the 61-year-old escape artist behind bars for decades in a maximum-security U.S. prison. Prosecutors are seeking $14 billion from “El Chapo,” which is more than double President Trump’s $5.7 billion wish list for the border wall.
From The Daily Wire:
During their pursuit of “El Chapo,” federal agents confiscated billions of dollars in cold hard cash, along with billions of dollars in more “solid” assets, including “gold-plated AK-47s and monogrammed, diamond-encrusted pistols.” By the time El Chapo was captured in 2016, federal agents had amassed a cache of more than $14 billion in seized assets.
Prosecutors are seeking a forfeiture judgment against El Chapo which would allow the federal government to keep the money.
Now Ted Cruz says he believes the money can be put to good use by building a border wall, ostensibly making it much harder for drug kingpins like El Chapo to traffic marijuana, heroin, and cocaine across the United States southern border. To that end, on Tuesday he introduced the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order, or EL CHAPO Act.
“Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way toward building a wall that will keep Americans safe and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals across our southern border,” Cruz said in a statement.
America’s justice system prevailed today in convicting Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo, on all 10 counts. U.S. prosecutors are seeking $14 billion in drug profits & other assets from El Chapo which should go towards funding our wall to #SecureTheBorder. https://t.co/hPwEUVM6SP
